Claude Code for Beginners: The Complete Guide
There are so many ways to access and leverage LLMs that it can be hard to remember that the most famous and ubiquitous one, ChatGPT, launched pretty recently–November 30, 2022. That is less than THREE YEARS from the publication of this post. In that time, it’s gone from interesting curiosity (my first prompt was getting ChatGPT to talk to me like Strong Bad) to research, coding, automation, and personal assistant powerhouse, and the genuinely helpful use cases just keep piling up.
But not everyone has made the move from using only the chatbot interface (which is still great and I use several on a daily basis) to integrating other types of LLM access and utilization (like command line interface/CLI, specialized web apps, and API integrations) into their work and personal life. These interfaces can seem intimidating, especially if it feels like you need an underlying, well-developed skillset to even dip your big toe in the waters.
I felt that way about Claude Code until a few weeks ago. I know command line and terminal exist. In college I even installed a Linux distro on one of my computers (with the help of Greg Wilder, an absolute genius of a professor who was a Linux pro). But I always stayed away from command line because I never really knew how to use it, what any of the commands did, or what any of the commands even WERE. I think I remembered a SUDO in there, and maybe ls? I can’t remember. This is the problem!
So when the hype around Claude Code started, I didn’t pay much attention because it seemed like something WAY beyond my pay (and knowledge) grade. But as the hype continued to grow instead of dying down, I figured I needed to at least give it a test drive.
WOW.
I’m glad I did.
It blends the best of natural language AND command line use cases, but with a very helpful split for people like me – I only have to use the natural language part, and Claude Code translates that into the commands needed to do whatever it is I asked it to do.
It is unreasonably capable. It is blazingly fast (compared to me trying to do any of the things I ask it to do). And it feels like the regular chatbot interface, but with some extra–and fantastic–bells and whistles.
So, I started building. And kept building. And got results that were better than I had hoped for. For instance, I had it transform half-baked ideas and builds from a Lovable/Replit-type service into actual functional sites and apps, like:
- A tick tac toe game I can play with my youngest daughter, on my phone, that doesn’t have ads or spyware!
- An interactive chore tracker for my kids
- The single most important piece of software ever written – FartGPT.pro.
Then I thought, “hey – wouldn’t it be fun to make a beginner’s guide to claude code and share it with people like me who are interested in learning more, but who are scared off by the command line interface?”
So I did.
